How do I back up and restore a Minecraft Realms world?
A mistake emptied a chest, a construction disappeared, or a world modification produced an unexpected result. On Realms, you can look for a previous backup, but the Restore button requires a bit of preparation. The correct file must belong to the correct world, the correct time period, and the correct edition of Minecraft.
This guide proposes a method to download, verify, and restore your world without confusing the different operations. Our Minecraft servers and multiplayer section complements these benchmarks. If you are still comparing solutions for hosting your game, start with the differences between Realms and a private server.
Backup, download, replace: what do you want to do?
A backup preserves a state of the world at a given time. Downloading the world creates a local copy on your device. Restoring reverts the Realm to a previous state. Replacing loads another world into the chosen slot. Finally, resetting can create a brand new world: this is not the button to choose if you want to get back your house from yesterday.
Imagine a village built on Sunday, then a bridge destroyed on Monday. Restoring a Sunday backup recovers the bridge in its Sunday state, but it may also remove constructions made after that backup. You must therefore ask the group what has changed between the two dates. The rollback affects the shared world, not just the area you are looking at.
These operations remain tied to your edition. A Java copy does not become a Bedrock copy just because you change its name. See Minecraft games and editions and our guide to multiplayer between Switch and PC if several devices are participating in the same adventure.
Prepare the operation with other players
Choose a time when no one is building. Announce a short interruption, then ask members to exit properly. For a major restoration, temporarily close the Realm from its settings if this option is available. The goal is to prevent a player from continuing a project while you are choosing the state that will replace the active world.
Note the name of the Realm, the slot concerned, and the approximate date of the problem. If you use multiple slots, give them distinct names: "family survival," "creative tests," or "finished adventure." A thumbnail alone can be misleading when two worlds start near a similar village.
Prepare three checkpoints: the main house, a known chest, and a recent construction. Our article on half-timbered medieval houses can inspire an easy-to-identify communal project. Follow-up notes also find their place in an organized space with our guide on arranging a Minecraft desk and the Minecraft accessories collection.
Download a local copy on Minecraft Java
Log in with the account that owns the Realm, then open the Realms screen in Minecraft Java. Select your Realm and its configuration. Locate the world backups or the action to download the latest version. Exact labels may vary based on language and updates: especially verify the selected world before starting the transfer.
Wait for the completion message. A bar that appears stationary does not mean you can consider the download complete. Once the copy is available, find it in your local worlds and identify it clearly. To keep it intact, duplicate it before a prolonged trial: opening a copy and playing in it causes it to evolve.
Verify that you are using a version adapted to that world. Avoid forcing it to open in an older version. If you own multiple installations, the guide for organizing a modpack in a separate installation helps you understand why two profiles might use different folders, even on the same computer.
A book-shaped keychain can accompany the notebook where you write down the names of your copies. The Minecraft parents' guide offers a framework for gradually entrusting these small checks to a player while keeping the owner account management.
Find backups and download on Bedrock
In Bedrock, open Play, then manage your Realm. Select the desired world or slot. Depending on the interface, look for World, Backups, or Records sections, then the Download World action. Some layouts also allow you to select a specific backup before downloading it. Look at the date associated with the chosen entry.
At the end of the transfer, the copy must appear in the list of local worlds on the device. Downloading does not mean that it is now available as a freely exportable file on all consoles. Local management possibilities depend on the platform. Therefore, distinguish between "I can open my copy in Minecraft" and "I have an archive that I can store elsewhere."
If you switch from one Bedrock device to another, use the same owner account to access the Realm management. An invited friend does not automatically get the right to download your world. Check the available space on the destination device before a large transfer and keep Minecraft open until the final confirmation.
To extend the theme of explored worlds, Minecraft posters feature varied landscapes. A downloaded world also allows you to calmly test a project for a modern house with a consistent palette before deciding how to continue the group's game.
Choose the right backup before restoring
First, identify when the problem occurred. "Monday evening" is less precise than "after the bridge was built, before the third player arrived." Use events that the group remembers to choose a backup prior to the incident. Also look at the displayed time zone or compare the proposed time with a known event.
Realms keeps automatic backups, but not every state forever. Older copies become more spaced out in the history. You will therefore not necessarily find a point corresponding to the exact minute you are looking for. For an important project, keeping your own dated copies is more reliable than assuming a very precise backup will remain available for several months.
When downloading an old backup is offered, you can examine it locally before restoring the shared world. Otherwise, first make a copy of the current state and plan an immediate check after restoration. Do not start several restorations at random: you risk losing track of which versions you have tried.
A simple map of constructions helps compare states. Our Minecraft construction section and the guide to create pixel art from a grid allow you to visually document certain projects. As for the bedroom, a yellow chest-patterned cushion cover or other Minecraft cushion covers incorporate the idea of storage into your decor.
Restore the world and check the result
In the Realm backup management, select the chosen state, then the Restore action when offered. Read the confirmation: it must correspond to the expected world and date. Wait for the operation to finish completely before trying to join. If an error message appears, write it down and check the Realm's status before restarting.
Then enter alone, or with the person who knows the place best. Visit your three checkpoints. Has the searched building returned? Do the chests correspond to the chosen period? Are important constructions located in another area present? Also have another member reconnect to check their situation, as the owner does not represent every player.
If the result is satisfactory, note the restored backup and announce to the group what has been kept or lost since that date. Then reopen access if you had closed the Realm. To resume an expedition, our guide on useful survival food can help prepare the necessary supplies for the next departure.
A restoration does not automatically solve a connection issue. If the world appears unavailable without a restoration message, consult the diagnosis for a connection that times out. The Minecraft lamp collection offers ideas to accompany game nights in your regular space.
Upload a local copy without confusing slots
You have worked on a local copy and want it to become the group's new world. This involves replacing or uploading a world, depending on the edition and the menu offered. First, save the currently online world, then choose exactly the slot that should receive the copy. Verify its name before confirming.
An example helps explain the risk: you download the world on Tuesday, build alone on Wednesday, then upload it on Thursday. If your friends have played in the meantime on the Realm, their additions do not automatically merge with yours. You are replacing one branch of the adventure with another. You must therefore decide together which version becomes the reference.
Keep a note indicating "starting copy," "modified copy," and "currently online version." Dated names are more useful than "new final world really final." To track preserved locations, the mouse pad depicting a river and a sunny village and other Minecraft mouse pads feature familiar scenery without replacing your real backup reference points.
Keep useful copies throughout your projects
Plan a copy before a major modification, after the end of an important project, and before changing devices or organization. Name it with a date and an event: "village finished," "before harbor renovation," or "end of season." You will immediately know why you kept it when several archives look alike.
Keep at least one reference copy that you do not use for playing. When the platform allows it, store an extra archive on another suitable medium. Periodically verify that a copy opens: a list of reassuring names does not prove you saved the right world.
Before letting a subscription expire, download what you want to keep and verify the displayed recovery terms. Access to the last world and the retention of old backups do not necessarily follow the same duration. Our article on finding the seed of a Minecraft world helps note an extra reference point, but a seed does not contain your constructions.
A finished Minecraft treehouse deserves to be copied just as much as a large castle. To bring a souvenir of that atmosphere into the room, the Minecraft bedroom decor guide offers pairings with Minecraft decorations.
You can complete your notebook with our Minecraft seeds and maps section: note down useful coordinates and explored locations, keeping this information separate from the files that actually track your progress.
Frequently asked questions about Realms backups
Does restoring only recover my inventory?
No. You revert to a saved state of the world. Alert other members, as their builds and progress may also be affected.
Does a local copy stay synchronized with the Realm?
No. After downloading, it evolves separately if you play it. Putting it back online requires a new operation and does not automatically merge changes made elsewhere.
Can a guest download the world?
Download management belongs to the owner. If you want to keep a collective adventure, arrange this copy with them before the Realm closes.
What should I do if no suggested backup is old enough?
Search for your local copies or archives kept separately. Without a corresponding copy, a restore cannot recreate a state that has disappeared from history.
What is the best final check?
Open the copy or the restored world, visit several known locations, and check some of the progress with another member. You will then know what your backup actually contains before continuing the adventure.
