End Outer Islands: how to access them in Minecraft?

The route to remember

After the first dragon, an End gateway allows you to reach the outer islands using an Ender pearl. Prepare a protected access, note the arrival point, and save enough resources for the return trip. The large islands may house cities; smaller isolated platforms serve mainly as waypoints.

The dragon is defeated, but exploration does not stop at the central portal. Far away, beyond a vast expanse of void, begins an archipelago of pale stone, chorus plants, and purple towers. Accessing the outer End islands becomes much easier when you can distinguish the different portals and organize your return before departing.

This guide offers an itinerary for a first expedition, without assuming you already possess wings. It complements our presentation of Minecraft biomes and dimensions with one priority: turning a distant discovery into a journey you can repeat with your loot.

Recognizing the right passage after the dragon

Three mechanisms should not be confused. The portal found in an Overworld stronghold leads to the central End island. The exit portal located in the center of this island returns you to the Overworld once the fight is over. The gateway leading to the outer islands is much smaller: a portal block framed by bedrock, which appears on the periphery of the island after defeating the dragon.

If the boss is still present, prepare for the first fight against the Ender Dragon first. Searching for the gateway while the dragon is attacking adds unnecessary difficulty to a battle that is already fluid. Once the area is calm, observe the perimeter of the island and look for this small suspended structure. Access may require a staircase or a platform built by you.

This passage cannot be crafted with an obsidian frame and a flint and steel. The guide on obtaining and using obsidian mainly concerns the Nether portal; it does not provide a recipe for an End gateway. Keeping these uses separate avoids transporting heavy materials that will not solve your problem.

To keep a souvenir of the previous battle, the miniature End Dragon keychain captures the boss's silhouette. Among the Minecraft keychains, a single character can be enough to evoke an entire adventure without needing to replicate a large setting.

Preparing equipment that leaves room for a return

Organize your inventory in a stable location before climbing to the gateway. Bring several stacks of building blocks, food, a pickaxe in good condition, and several Ender pearls. Keep some pearls for returns and emergencies: using your entire supply to save a few seconds on the first trips creates a dependency for future encounters.

Solid armor and boots suited for falls make combat more comfortable without nullifying the danger of the void. Our article on enchantments and potions helps you plan by desired effect: surviving a fall to the ground, slowing a descent, or extending the lifespan of a piece. None of these preparations justify jumping into an area where you cannot see any land.

Before leaving, check your durability bars. Our method for repairing and combining equipment at the anvil helps prepare the pieces you care about. If they already have the Mending enchantment, repair them with experience before the expedition; the name of the enchantment does not guarantee spontaneous repair in the middle of a bridge.

Unlike the conditions described in our guide to Nether biomes, water can be placed in the End. So, add a water bucket, useful in this dimension, and possibly a slow falling potion for vertical structures. Reserve free slots for loot. Finally, leave rare items without a specific purpose for this trip at home: a stash lost in the void is much harder to recover than a chest forgotten at your base.

Crossing the gateway with an Ender pearl

Build an ascent that offers a proper landing in front of the structure. A staircase with railings is more pleasant to reuse than a narrow column of blocks. Do not try to break the bedrock in standard survival. The goal is to aim for the portal block visible through the opening using an Ender pearl.

  1. Finish the landing and verify that you will not back up directly into the void.
  2. Place a pearl in an easily accessible slot on your hotbar.
  3. Aim for the center of the portal, then throw from a stationary position.
  4. After teleporting, release your movement keys and observe the terrain.
  5. Immediately note the coordinates and secure access to the arrival point.

A pearl is a projectile: a poorly aimed throw can teleport you somewhere other than intended. It is better to correct your position on the landing than to keep throwing from an edge. The preparatory reflexes presented in our survival guides remain useful even after the dragon: accessible food, marked exit, and terrain observed before running.

On a server, leave space for the next player to arrive. Announce when the platform is ready and avoid placing a chest or obstacle in the line of exit. This small amount of organization counts for more than a group departure where everyone pushes others while trying to see the scenery.

In the Minecraft figurines collection, then choose smaller silhouettes to accompany the dragon without masking its wings. Measure the depth of the shelf before assembling the set.

Understanding the archipelago and choosing a direction

The outer End is not a single continuous island. You encounter large landmasses, jagged borders, and small pieces of terrain separated by void. Large islands are the most interesting objectives for starting your search for cities and chorus. A tiny isolated platform does not necessarily mean a structure is right behind it.

Displayed biome names do not appear the same way depending on the edition: Java distinguishes several End biomes, while Bedrock groups this dimension differently. To prepare your itinerary, rely first on the actual relief: width of the solid ground, approach slope, length of the next gap, and visibility of the return path.

Choose a direction for prospecting and note the main waypoints. For example: gateway, starting large island, bridge to the east, tower visible to the north. Coordinates accompanied by labels are more useful than a long series of numbers without context. A sign pointing toward the return also reduces hesitation when multiple bridges look alike.

The Minecraft structures section helps to distinguish natural terrain from a building to explore. A city forms a cluster of purpur towers; a group of chorus plants remains just vegetation. Do not spend your last resources to reach a silhouette you have not yet identified.

Connecting islands without improvising over the void

For a first expedition without elytra, bridges are often the most readable solution. Estimate the distance before starting and check your inventory. A stack of blocks seems generous at the edge of an island, but a crossing and its protective railings quickly consume several stacks. If your supply runs low, go back to get more materials from a stable area rather than extending the bridge further.

Crouch while you build at the edge, but do not treat this command as insurance against all mistakes. A faulty key press, a block placed too low, or an unexpected interaction remain possible. Widen the passages you intend to use with loot and add railings in places where you will need to turn.

The principles of construction in Minecraft take a very practical form here: a landing for changing direction, an entrance visible from each shore, and a width adapted to the task. A simple but well-finished bridge is better than a spectacular route that requires a jump to the last block.

Avoid blindly throwing pearls toward a very distant island. Land that you can distinguish is not necessarily within reach of a comfortable throw. If you are unfamiliar with the trajectory, practice over a solid surface. The void does not allow for the same margin of error as a base courtyard.

The black Enderman face mousepad uses a dark palette that is easy to integrate around a keyboard. Our guide on choosing mousepad dimensions and the Minecraft mousepad collection allow you to compare the design with the space actually available.

Managing Endermen and the first cities

Endermen occupy a large part of the archipelago. Keep your gaze directed toward your path and avoid looking into their eyes. If you trigger an attack, do not cross a narrow bridge to flee. Reach a wide surface, use a suitable shelter, and apply the reflexes from our guide on fighting an Enderman without getting trapped.

A carved pumpkin worn on your head can prevent aggression triggered by eye contact, but its visual obstruction and the space taken up compared to a helmet should be tested before leaving. Choose based on your comfort level. Equipment you are trying out for the first time over the void is rarely a good learning tool.

Approaching a city, the danger changes. Shulkers fire projectiles that cause levitation; the end of the effect can be followed by a fall. Enter with a plan to shelter under a ceiling or reach a landing. The guide on crafting and using a Minecraft shield completes your preparation, but a shield does not replace the need to watch for shots arriving from multiple sides.

Not all cities have ships. Elytra are found in an End ship, not automatically in the first tower encountered. For a first outing, you can also tag a city, harvest some resources, and return with more space or suitable potions.

The Minecraft plush collection allows you to associate this Enderman with an Overworld character to tell the story of your adventure's departure and return.

Bringing back chorus and preparing a light base

Chorus offers an accessible goal even if you do not immediately find a ship. Before breaking an entire plant, consider the flowers located at its ends: they allow you to start new plantations on End stone. The harvested fruit has another role. Do not assume that a chest full of fruit will replace the flowers needed for your farming project.

Chorus fruit can cause teleportation when eaten. Do not use it as a bread substitute when you are trying to stay precisely on a small platform. Keep ordinary food for your travels, and test this fruit in an area where an unexpected movement will not compromise your return.

A first base in the outer islands can remain very simple: a wide floor, a roof, a chest, a block supply, and navigation markers. Do not try to sleep in a bed in the End: using one causes an explosion. The habits from your first night in the Overworld must therefore be adapted to this dimension, maintaining the shelter but changing how you organize resource recovery.

If you bring an Ender chest, know how to retrieve it before mining it. Its personal inventory remains useful for securing a few precious items, but transporting the block correctly requires specific preparation. A well-marked ordinary chest remains a simple drop-off point for building materials.

Returning with loot and keeping a reusable route

The return begins the moment you decide to turn around, not when your food runs out. Set a clear limit: inventory sufficiently full, block supply reached, or route becoming difficult to memorize. The desire to check out one last silhouette is understandable; it must not consume the resources reserved for the return.

Find your bearings until you reach a return gateway and prepare to throw an ender pearl onto a stable platform. This step leads back toward the central island. You can then use the exit portal to return to the Overworld. Keep the distinction in mind: getting back to the central island and exiting the dimension are two successive operations.

Back at the base, put away your findings before heading out again. Note what you were actually missing: blocks, space, better orientation, or a way to handle falls. This list makes a second trip much more effective than simply increasing armor power.

Frequently asked questions about the outer islands

Can you go there before defeating the dragon?

The outer islands exist beyond a large expanse of void. A long bridge can connect to them without a gateway, but this method consumes a lot of blocks and increases risks. For a first trip, the gateway obtained after the dragon provides a more convenient route.

Do you need to have elytra already?

No. Bridges and walkways allow for exploration on foot. The wings are actually one of the goals you can pursue within the end ships. Prepare for the trip as a land expedition until you have flight equipment you can use.

Does every large island contain a city?

No. Suitable terrain does not guarantee a structure on every island. Explore with a set direction, noted waypoints, and a supply to turn back. A trip without a city can still yield chorus fruit and a reliable route.

What is the first thing to note after teleporting?

The coordinates of your arrival point and how to get back to the gateway. Do this before chasing an Enderman or examining a distant tower. This landmark turns scattered exploration into a journey you can repeat with peace of mind.
