Minecraft Ocean Monument: Preparing for an underwater exploration

A plan for a first exploration

Locate the monument in a deep ocean, prepare water breathing and a return point at the surface, then search for the three elder guardians. Their mining fatigue complicates block recovery. Once the threat is managed, you can focus on sponges, prismarine, and gold.

From the boat, a green silhouette emerges underwater. The Minecraft ocean monument seems calm, but its corridors are guarded by guardians, and the available air imposes a limit on every turn. Underwater preparation transforms this visit: you can observe, navigate, and fight without constantly searching for the surface.

This guide explains how to organize a first expedition and return with useful resources. It complements the Minecraft structures section with a method adapted to an entirely submerged building.

Finding a monument in deep oceans

Ocean monuments generate in compatible deep ocean biomes. A small bay or shallow shoreline is therefore not a good place to look for one. Navigate with a boat, observe the visible seabed, and note the large areas already covered.

The building is recognizable by its prismarine, sea lanterns, and symmetrical silhouette. It should not be confused with an ocean ruin made of a few walls or a shipwreck. The monument represents a much larger complex, with an entrance and several connected volumes.

A monument map sold by a cartographer can guide your search. Prepare the trades described in our villager professions guide and check your cartographer's offers. Depending on the version and world settings, their progression and offer selection may differ from older videos.

If you need to reach merchants first, our article on finding a village helps prepare the journey. Do not confuse the monument map with the one used to locate a mansion. Look at the icon and the destination name before you leave.

On Java 26.3, exploration maps are distinct items and can no longer be zoomed out like ordinary maps. The name may also have changed compared to an older guide. Use the map to get closer, then save the structure's coordinates once you have found it.

The biomes and dimensions file helps place this search within the context of ocean exploration. Methodical navigation with landmarks will be more useful than diving under every small patch of dark water.

Preparing breathing, visibility, and movement

The water breathing potion is a comfortable preparation for a first visit. At the brewing stand, an awkward potion brewed with a pufferfish provides this effect; redstone can be used to extend its duration. Check the name and time displayed on your vials before leaving.

Night vision improves environmental readability, but it does not allow you to breathe. A helmet with Respiration extends the time available underwater without replacing unlimited protection. Always distinguish between what improves sight, what helps with breathing, and what protects against attacks.

Aquatic enchantments also provide comfort: Aqua Affinity concerns underwater mining, and Depth Strider improves movement. The enchantments and potions file helps allocate these effects. None of them alone removes the mining fatigue applied by elder guardians.

Prepare repaired armor, food, blocks, and a weapon that can be used underwater. A trident can be useful if you already own one; our guide on obtaining and preparing a trident explains its place in your equipment. It is not mandatory to find one before visiting the monument.

Reserve potions for the return journey. A long duration does not mean you should remain submerged until the very last seconds. Corridors, fights, and orientation errors can lengthen the path to the exit.

The Minecraft figures allow you to complete the scene according to the characters you wish to highlight, without reproducing the entire monument on a shelf.

Setting up a starting point at the surface

Before going down, create a return point that is easy to find: a well-placed boat, noted coordinates, and an accessible platform or shore. Install a chest for supplies at a distance where you can prepare without immediately being attacked by the monument.

Plan a place to catch your breath and reorganize your inventory. A small coastal base with a bed, a chest, and food makes a potential restart much simpler. The habits of preparing a first shelter remain useful, even with advanced equipment.

The Minecraft survival file helps define backup gear. Leave some of it at the starting point rather than carrying all your valuable items during reconnaissance. If a first attempt fails, you can return with supplies to breathe and defend yourself.

Make an initial observation from the outside without engaging the entire building. Spot the entrance, the top section, and the two wings. This simple overview provides a mental map that is often missing for players who enter directly through an improvised opening.

Avoid relying on an air pocket trick without having tested it in your edition. Blocks and their behavior in water differ between Java and Bedrock. For this first visit, a supply of potions and a clear path back to the surface make the preparation easier to verify.

Understanding guardians and their beams

Regular guardians circulate around the monument and inside. Their ranged attack is telegraphed by a visible beam. Seek to break their line of sight using walls and corners rather than staying exposed while trying to finish another action.

Their spikes also make melee attacks trickier. Watch your health and don't let yourself be lured into a chase that takes you away from the entrance. Combat in water takes place in three dimensions: an enemy can be above or behind you, not just at the end of the hallway.

Elder guardians are larger and much fewer in number. The monument generates three, spread throughout its structure. They do not respawn after being defeated, unlike regular guardians which can continue to spawn around the building.

Keep count of the elder guardians defeated as you go. In a group game, clearly announce which one has been eliminated and from which area. This avoids searching long for a threat already handled or thinking the building is cleared when an elder guardian remains in a wing.

Axolotls can participate in aquatic combat, but they do not replace your personal preparation. Our article on finding and breeding axolotls allows you to discover their needs before taking them into a dangerous area.

The pink axolotl keychain with strap recreates this companion in a miniature format. Among the Minecraft keychains, it adds a touch of color that contrasts with the monument's prismarine tones.

Managing mining fatigue without losing water breathing

The elder guardian can apply Mining Fatigue III. This effect significantly slows down block breaking. It explains why a usually fast pickaxe seems almost motionless when you try to open a passage in the monument.

The effect is not a malfunction of your tool. Switching pickaxes immediately or adding new enchantments does not remove its cause. Look for the elder guardians and progress through existing passages instead of relying on mining every wall you encounter.

Milk removes mining fatigue, but it also removes other active effects, including water breathing and night vision. If you drink it, do so in a safe place and prepare for what comes next. As long as an elder guardian remains nearby, the fatigue can be applied again.

For a first visit, it is often simpler to deal with the three elder guardians first, then wait for the effect to end or remove it in safety. You can then return with the necessary potions to harvest blocks.

If your pickaxe really needs maintenance, repair it at the base using Mending or anvil repair methods. Distinguishing between the item's condition and the character's effects avoids wasting resources on the wrong problem.

Compare the Minecraft lamps and choose a location that keeps the light visible without interfering with other activities at your desk or reading corner.

Exploring rooms with simple landmarks

Inside, rooms can look alike. Mark important intersections with a contrasting block or a marker whose direction you decided before starting. For example, a marker on the right when entering can become a landmark on the left when returning.

Do not block a passage used by a partner. In a group, assign roles: one player follows the route, another watches for enemies, and everyone monitors their breathing time. Scattering in three dimensions without announcing room changes makes regrouping difficult.

Start with a limited goal, such as exploring one wing and then returning to the starting point. This progression teaches you about the building without requiring you to finish everything with the first set of potions. A controlled return is already a useful success.

When an effect duration becomes short, leave the room before opening a new passage. A previously unknown room may contain multiple intersections. You don't yet know how much time will be needed to find the route back.

The 30 cm blue cubic axolotl plush evokes another creature associated with aquatic exploration. Minecraft plushies allow you to alternate formats with smaller figures in room decor.

Harvesting sponges, prismarine, and gold

The monument is not visited like a dungeon filled with chests to open. The interesting resources are part of the building or come from its guardians: prismarine, sea lanterns, sponges, and gold blocks from the central treasure.

Some monuments have sponge rooms, but this room is not guaranteed in every building. Elder guardians are also a source of wet sponges. Keep space in your inventory to retrieve them before leaving.

A dry sponge absorbs water around it and becomes wet. You can dry it in a furnace to reuse it. To dry out a large area, divide the space into smaller volumes: if the outer water keeps returning, an isolated sponge is not enough to turn the entire ocean into a dry room.

Sea lanterns and certain blocks require you to think about the tool used if you want to keep their shape. Comparing Fortune or Silk Touch helps prepare the harvest. The blocks and ores file also helps distinguish the decorative block from its components.

For gold, plan for a pickaxe of an appropriate material. If you still need to upgrade your equipment, our guide on diamond searching provides a preparation step. Do not start a major harvest when your breathing supply is nearing its end.

Turning the discovery into a long-term project

Once the three elder guardians are defeated, the monument becomes simpler to exploit, but it is not automatically empty of enemies. Regular guardians remain a factor to consider for work and movement.

You can start with a small dried-out room, a storage point, and clear access to the surface. A properly activated conduit can then improve underwater conditions within its area of effect. It requires its own materials and an activation structure; placing it alone in the water is not enough.

Decide on your project before dismantling large parts of the building. A submarine base, a prismarine reserve, and a future harvesting facility do not require the same layout. Keep coordinates and a record of explored rooms to prepare for the next steps at the base.

The theme can also be transposed into a room using blue, green, and a few aquatic silhouettes. The Minecraft bedroom decoration guide helps in arranging these elements. The biome map and character towel and the collection of Minecraft towels offer another way to bring the game's landscapes into an everyday object.

Compare Minecraft rugs while considering floor space and nearby furniture. A main pattern remains more legible when it is not entirely hidden under a table or bed.

Frequently asked questions about the Ocean Monument

Should you drain the monument before fighting?

No. An initial exploration can be done underwater with proper equipment. Draining an entire building is a major project, which is particularly complicated as long as the Elder Guardians are applying Mining Fatigue.

Is milk a permanent solution to Mining Fatigue?

No. It removes the current effect, but an Elder Guardian still present can reapply it. It also removes useful potions. Use it with a breathing plan and avoid drinking it without preparation in the middle of a submerged room.

Do Elder Guardians return after being defeated?

No, those generated with the monument do not respawn after being eliminated. Regular Guardians may continue to spawn. This difference explains why the building remains dangerous even after victory over the three Elder Guardians.

What should you bring back during your first visit?

Prioritize sponges and resources that serve your next project, then return via a known route. You can come back for a larger harvest once your equipment is restocked and the rooms are better mapped out.
