Minecraft Beacon: build the pyramid and choose the effects

To activate a beacon: place it in the center of a solid pyramid made of compatible blocks, clear a path for the beam to the sky, then choose an effect in its interface and confirm with an accepted payment. A complete four-tier pyramid requires 164 blocks, in addition to the beacon.

The beacon can speed up construction, facilitate movement around the base, and serve as a visible landmark. But the light beam is not enough to explain all its settings: the tiers, the material of the pyramid, and the choice of effects all follow distinct rules.

This guide accompanies you from the Nether Star to a functional installation. It complements the Minecraft construction projects with concrete quantities, effect options, and a method to find what is blocking when the beacon refuses to activate.

Crafting the beacon and preparing its location

The recipe uses five glass blocks, three obsidian blocks, and a Nether Star. Place the star in the center of the crafting table, the obsidian along the entire bottom row, and the glass in the five remaining slots. The result is the beacon block, which you must then install on its pyramid.

The Nether Star is obtained by defeating the Wither. This is the stage that requires the most preparation: do not start this fight in the middle of your village or your storage area. Our guide to summoning and defeating the Wither details the choice of terrain and equipment before this reward.

Obsidian is prepared separately. If you do not have a supply yet, consult our method to produce and mine obsidian. The Minecraft crafting folder helps to organize these ingredients without confusing the recipe materials and those for the pyramid.

Choose the location according to the desired use. To dig a large room, place the beacon near the work area. To improve movement within the base, look for a central position. A beautiful monument off to the side can be a successful landmark while covering the area where you actually spend time poorly.

The star is also a recognizable symbol outside the game. Among the Minecraft keychains, it serves to recall this progression stage with a discreet object.

Building the tiers with the right quantities

The smallest installation consists of a full three-by-three block square, with the beacon placed in the center on top. It requires nine blocks. To add a level, place a five-by-five layer beneath this square. The following layers measure seven-by-seven and then nine-by-nine. Each tier must be complete.

Tiers Layers, from bottom to top Total blocks
1 3 × 3 9
2 5 × 5 then 3 × 3 34
3 7 × 7, 5 × 5, 3 × 3 83
4 9 × 9, 7 × 7, 5 × 5, 3 × 3 164

A hollow pyramid does not work like a full pyramid. Count the blocks hidden in the center as well, not just the visible edge. For four tiers made entirely of iron, the 164 blocks correspond to 1,476 ingots. It is therefore useful to start with a small installation before committing such a significant reserve to the complete version.

Compatible materials are iron, gold, emerald, diamond, and netherite blocks. You can mix them. The rarest material does not grant a more powerful effect for an equal number of tiers: a properly built iron pyramid can provide the same choices as an equivalent diamond pyramid.

Copper, lapis lazuli, or redstone blocks do not replace these materials. Consult the Minecraft blocks and ores to prepare the appropriate stocks. The blast furnace can speed up the preparation of your iron ingots before they are assembled into blocks.

Keep the beacon exactly centered above the top square. If you plan to expand later, reserve enough ground for the nine-by-nine base from the start. This avoids having to move the monument because a wall or staircase prevents the addition of the top tier.

Clearing the beam and confirming an effect

The beacon needs a clear path to the sky. For a first test, install it in the open air, without an opaque roof above it. You can then integrate the structure into a building while maintaining an opening or appropriate transparent materials. An underground installation therefore requires checking the entire column, not just the space directly above the block.

Open the interface when the pyramid is recognized. Choose the main effect available, add an accepted payment—for example, an iron ingot—then confirm. An emerald, a diamond, or a gold or netherite ingot are also usable items. Spending a diamond does not make the same effect stronger than payment with iron.

This payment is used to save the setting; it is not fuel to be renewed every few minutes. As long as the installation remains functional, the beacon applies its effects in its area. To change the choice, open the interface again and prepare a new payment.

After confirmation, stay nearby for a few moments and check the effect icon. This verification distinguishes a pyramid that emits a beam from a configuration whose power has actually been selected. If you change several settings, verify the final result instead of assuming all old options remain active.

The Minecraft enchantments and effects folder helps compare temporary effects with those maintained by a beacon zone. Proximity to the latter remains essential: its power does not indefinitely accompany the player to the ends of the world.

Choosing effects according to your activity

With one tier, you can choose Speed or Haste. Two tiers add Resistance and Jump Boost to the possibilities. Three tiers provide access to Strength. The fourth tier allows you to add Regeneration as a secondary power or to reinforce the main power to level II.

A beacon does not, therefore, provide all the effects from its menu simultaneously. For a mining project, Haste II is a frequent choice. For traveling between several buildings, Speed may be more comfortable. A project at height can benefit from Jump Boost, but this does not replace the preparation of access points and platforms.

Resistance reduces certain damage without making the player invulnerable. Strength concerns melee combat; it does not turn a bow into a more powerful weapon. Adapt the choice to the current activity rather than selecting a symbol just because it is on the last unlocked level.

The Minecraft survival folder helps keep the right priorities: a useful effect complements equipment, supplies, and terrain reading. It does not replace an escape route or safe ground around a work site.

To represent the theme of mining in a costume or presentation, the Minecraft tool accessories offer immediately recognizable shapes. A gold pickaxe can evoke the collection of your pyramid's materials without claiming to reproduce a real enchantment.

Using Haste without confusing speed with efficiency

Haste speeds up mining. It does not replace Fortune, which affects certain harvested quantities, nor Silk Touch, which modifies the shape of the recovered block. Our Fortune and Silk Touch comparison helps you choose the enchantment that accompanies your project under the beacon.

With Haste II and a suitable pickaxe equipped with Efficiency V, certain blocks like stone can be mined very quickly. This does not mean that all materials become instantaneous: block resistance, the tool, and mining conditions matter. Deepslate layers do not behave like a simple stone wall.

Rapid progress can suddenly open a pocket of lava or a void. Work in strips, keep a distance back, and inspect newly revealed surfaces. For a search for diamonds in the depths, the right altitude and travel safety remain relevant even with a beacon.

Monitor the pickaxe's durability and plan for its maintenance. Mending requires collecting experience under the right conditions; quickly breaking stone does not by itself ensure continuous repair. Keep a replacement tool rather than discovering an almost empty gauge in the middle of a session.

Netherite can be used for your equipment before being devoted to a very expensive decorative pyramid. Since compatible materials do not change the power at the same size, choose your investment according to the tools and constructions that will be genuinely useful to you.

The turquoise diamond necklace takes up the motif of a precious resource among the Minecraft necklaces. It can evoke mining progression without needing to multiply objects in the space where you play.

Positioning the beacon and coloring the beam

Range increases with tiers. Therefore, place the pyramid while considering the area to cover and check the effect at its boundaries. Vertical behavior can differ depending on the edition; for a multi-level installation, test the rooms where you want to work rather than relying solely on the distance seen on a plan.

When you leave the zone, the effect does not necessarily disappear at the exact second of crossing. Wait for its expiration to verify a limit. Conversely, when you return, let the beacon re-apply its power before concluding that it is not working.

Colored glass placed in the path of the beam changes its appearance. This color serves as a visual marker, not a power setting. You can assign one color to the mine and another to the base to identify the locations. Keep maintenance access easy, especially if you install glass in a roof.

A copper surround can accompany the monument, but it does not replace the pyramid blocks. Distinguish between decor and functional layers before covering the structure. Photograph the finished tiers if you want to be able to diagnose a problem after adding the facade.

In a bedroom, the Minecraft bedroom decor guide allows you to pick up the idea of a central light point. The Minecraft lamps offer different shapes; our article on lighting placement helps to choose a suitable position.

For a desk with blue accents, the diamond ore mouse pad can complete the selection of Minecraft mouse pads. The diamond ore cushion cover echoes this color family among the Minecraft cushion covers. Choose the locations with our method for setting up a Minecraft desk in order to preserve usable space.

Solving common beacon problems

Why isn't the beam lighting up?

Check the centering, the nine blocks of the first layer, the materials used, and the column above. Start with a simple setup in the open air, then add the tiers and decor once operation is confirmed.

Why isn't Haste II available?

You need a full four-tier pyramid. Select Haste as the primary power, then its enhancement in the secondary slot, and confirm the setting. A hollow tier or an incompatible block can prevent the expected level from being recognized.

Can a fifth tier be added to gain more power?

The four tiers constitute the maximum useful size of a standard pyramid. Further enlarging the base can serve for decor, but does not unlock a new level of effect in this game mechanic.

Which first project should I choose?

Install a small pyramid near a frequently used area, test the activation, and then prepare the materials for the additional tiers. Validate each layer before hiding it. This progression will give you a beacon that is easy to understand, maintain, and move as your projects evolve.
