Minecraft Bow Enchantments: Choosing Between Infinity and Mending

The one-minute choice

Infinity saves ordinary arrows, but the bow continues to wear out. Mending allows you to repair the bow with experience, but you must supply the arrows. These two enchantments are mutually exclusive on a single bow in a standard survival game.

A good bow is not just about its power. It must also match your playstyle: long trips far from chests, base defense, regular exploration, or occasional combat. Choosing between Infinity and Mending is primarily about deciding which resource you prefer to manage: ammunition or weapon replacement.

This guide details both options, other useful enchantments, and a method for preparing your bow without wasting your books. Also, check out our enchantments and potions folder to organize all your gear.

Comparing arrow convenience and bow durability

With Infinity, keep at least one ordinary arrow in your inventory. Standard shots will then not deplete this reserve. This frees up space and avoids having to keep an eye on a dwindling stack during exploration. However, every use can still contribute to the bow's wear: the name of the enchantment concerns the ammunition, not an infinite lifespan for the item.

With Mending, you carry and consume your arrows, but you can restore the bow's durability using experience collected while it is held or equipped appropriately. Our Mending: how it works and repair guide specifies the conditions. A bow left in the base chest does not repair itself remotely because you are earning experience in a mine.

Situation Infinity Mending
Long trip with limited space Very light standard reserve Bring enough arrows
Regular access to many arrows Less significant logistics benefit Easy maintenance
Tipped arrows They remain consumed They remain consumed
A bow you are attached to Repairs to anticipate Repair via experience

This table provides a starting point, not a universal ranking. A game where you can easily buy arrows does not have the same constraints as an expedition where every inventory slot counts.

Choosing Infinity for travel with little ammunition

Infinity is well-suited for players who mainly use ordinary arrows and head far from their supplies. A fight against several creatures, crossing a valley, and a few missed shots won't force you to craft new ammunition in the middle of your journey. Simply check that the required arrow is present before leaving the base.

This savings is particularly helpful when preparing for the first fight against the Ender Dragon. It does not replace the need to learn the fight phases and carry a melee weapon. A well-enchanted bow does not hit every target in every situation, and certain moments require changing your approach.

Also, have a plan for when the bow nears breakage. A backup weapon at the base, materials for a new bow, and a few available books prevent you from depending entirely on a single item. The Minecraft survival folder helps prepare these reserves without cluttering your inventory with useless equipment.

Infinity does not produce a stock of arrows that can be picked up after firing at a wall. Nor does it turn special arrows into free ammunition. Keep these limitations in mind when preparing for a practice session or an expedition that requires a specific effect.

Choosing Mending when arrows are easy to obtain

Mending becomes very interesting when your base regularly provides arrows. You can craft them using flint, sticks, and feathers, collect them from enemy loot, or buy them from a Fletcher villager. The choice depends on the resources and facilities you already have.

Our article on villager professions explains how workstations and trades are organized. If a village is part of your progression, ensure a safe route before relying on its merchants as your permanent reserve. The guide to finding and reaching a village completes this preparation.

To repair, hold the bow while collecting experience in a secure location. Avoid engaging in difficult melee combat while saving the bow only for its repair. A short routine at the base or in a mastered zone remains more comfortable than an improvised operation during an attack.

Also monitor other items with Mending: they may receive a portion of the available experience when they are eligible for repair. To understand why the bow is repairing slowly, check the status of your armor and other gear instead of assuming the enchantment is no longer working.

The skeleton archer badge features one of the most well-known archers in the game. In Minecraft accessories, a badge offers a different way to evoke this theme than a large weapon replica.

Other useful bow enchantments

Power increases the damage of arrows fired by the bow, up to level V. It is generally the foundation of an offensive bow. It does not replace the need to properly draw the bow and aim: a hasty shot or one sent into an obstacle does not become effective solely through its level.

Unbreaking, up to level III, slows down wear. It is suitable for both Infinity and Mending. In the former, it spaces out replacement needs; in the latter, it reduces the frequency of repair sessions. The bow remains, however, an item whose durability must be monitored.

Punch, up to level II, increases the knockback applied to the target. This can keep a creature at a distance, but it can also push it into a spot that is inconvenient for collecting its loot. Consider the terrain before automatically seeking maximum knockback.

Flame ignites arrows. Its value depends on the target and the context; it does not guarantee an advantage against creatures immune to fire. To choose a weapon based on the enemy, also check the Minecraft mobs and creatures folder.

Crossbow enchantments like Quick Charge, Multishot, and Piercing are not standard bow upgrades. Both weapons share ammunition, but they have their own rules. Check the item type before buying or combining a book meant for a different weapon.

Preparing books and avoiding useless combinations

You can enchant a bow at an enchanting table or apply books to it at an anvil. The table can provide several compatible enchantments, but it does not automatically offer the exact combination you have in mind. Mending is obtained through means other than standard enchantment at the table.

First, write down your target combination: for example, Power, Unbreaking, and Infinity, or Power, Unbreaking, and Mending. Then add Flame or Punch depending on your fighting style. This list prevents spending levels on a series of trials that you ultimately wish to undo.

The guide to using the anvil and reading its costs explains the importance of operation history. With each combination, check the result and the price before retrieving the item. Changing the order of entries can change the cost or which enchantments are kept; this is not a formality to ignore.

The "Too expensive!" message does not always mean you just need to accumulate more levels. Anvil rules also impose limits on operations in survival mode. A series of repairs can make an Infinity bow difficult to maintain; prepare its replacement before the next planned fight.

If you are also comparing mining tools, our Fortune or Silk Touch article presents another incompatibility to anticipate. The principle remains useful: determine the item's use before stacking enchantments.

Minecraft toys allow you to compare this bow with other items inspired by the game. Choose the theme and storage space first, then add the elements that truly complement it.

Organizing standard arrows and tipped arrows

With Infinity, keep a clearly identified ordinary arrow and monitor the potential presence of special arrows. Depending on inventory organization, you might fire ammunition you wanted to keep. Perform a test in a quiet area after reorganizing your slots.

Tipped arrows are consumed even with Infinity. Spectral arrows in Java are as well. If your goal is to slow down a target or make it easier to track, prepare a reserve corresponding to that use and do not rely on the enchantment to extend it indefinitely.

For a Mending bow, set a starting reserve and a threshold for return. One stack may be enough for a short, controlled outing; a long exploration requires a buffer adapted to your accuracy and the number of fights. Note your actual consumption over a few sessions rather than adopting a universal number.

The Minecraft crafting page helps organize crafting ingredients. Keep feathers, flint, and sticks near the workbench if you produce your own arrows. A well-identified ammo chest avoids leaving with the ingredients but without the finished arrows.

You can recall your entire adventure kit with the blue sword braided bracelet. Minecraft bracelets offer details that are easy to pair with an outfit, while the blue pickaxe necklace and Minecraft necklaces evoke the exploration and collection side of the game.

Adapting your bow to the terrain and enemies

A bow draws while your movement speed is slowed. Keep space to retreat and an obstacle behind which you can regain your position. Shooting in the middle of a narrow passage, with a creature already in melee range, significantly reduces the distance advantage.

Against a Creeper, anticipate the approach instead of waiting until the last moment. Our guide understanding the Creeper explosion helps identify the situation before it escalates. A missed shot at close range should lead you to gain distance, not stand still to try again immediately.

In the Nether, spot cover before engaging a distant target. The guide to preparing for a Nether fortress search describes an exploration where ranged shots can be useful, but where walkways and lava also force you to monitor your movement.

Keep a melee weapon and know how to return to your shield when the situation demands it. Controls and hand management differ by edition and platform; practice switching items without looking at your inventory for long.

At your base, build a small practice area with a solid background behind the target and an open space on the sides. Shoot from several distances, observe the trajectory, and compare positions. This session teaches more about your actual comfort than a simple look at the enchantment list.

Which bow should you prepare based on your playstyle?

You explore far from the base

Infinity is often comfortable if you use regular arrows. Check the durability before you leave and plan for a suitable backup weapon for when you return. Saving space shouldn't lead to you heading out with a nearly broken bow.

You regularly defend a well-equipped base

Mending becomes practical with a chest of arrows and regular access to experience. Maintenance slips into your routine. You can keep spare ammunition near your usual departure points, without carrying all your reserves.

You mainly prepare for occasional combat

Use the best combination available without waiting for a perfect bow for every little trip. Power and Unbreaking already constitute a useful improvement. Then, decide between Infinity and Mending based on the problem you encounter most often in your game.

Among the Minecraft figurines, choose one or two complementary figures so that the scene remains clear. A small set can tell an adventure as clearly as a fully filled shelf.

Frequently asked questions about bow enchantments

Can you have Infinity and Mending together?

Not under the standard rules of current survival mode. If you see this combination on a server, it may come from a mod, a command, or an old item. An ordinary anvil does not allow you to replicate this result on a new bow.

Why is my Infinity bow no longer shooting?

First, check for the presence of a regular arrow and the condition of the bow. Infinity does not remove the need for that initial piece of ammunition. Also, check the server's specific rules if your game uses mods.

Does Mending improve damage?

No. It relates to repair. Power acts on damage, while Unbreaking acts on wear and tear. Separating these roles allows you to choose a consistent combination and understand what your weapon is actually missing.

Is it necessary to own two bows?

It is not mandatory. A single bow adapted to your resources is enough for many games. A second one becomes useful if you alternate between very different uses or wish to keep a backup solution ready at the base.
