How do I find the seed for my Minecraft world?

Keep in mind: on Java, the /seed command allows you to view the world seed when you have the necessary access. On Bedrock, look for the seed field in the world settings. Copy the full number, including any negative sign, then note the edition and version so you can reuse it correctly.

You’ve discovered an ideal valley or a village next to your spawn point, but you no longer know how to find the same world. The Minecraft seed serves as the starting point for its generation. Keeping it allows you to recreate a comparable terrain under the appropriate conditions.

This guide explains how to read the seed, note it down, and verify a new creation. It also distinguishes the seed from a save file: the number does not contain your houses, chests, or progress. Our Minecraft seeds and maps page allows you to continue exploring once you have retrieved this information.

Understanding what the seed allows you to retrieve

The seed is a value used by the generator to create the world. It plays a role in the distribution of terrain, biomes, and other elements based on the rules of the edition and version. Two worlds created with the same number are therefore only comparable if their generation settings match.

The seed does not memorize what you have built. A house, a tunnel, a full chest, or a cleared forest belong to the world save. Recreating the seed yields a new world generated from that value, not a copy of your current game.

The world name is also not its seed. A world called "My Survival" may have received a random number upon its creation. Renaming it does not change its seed. Likewise, the coordinates of your base indicate a location in the world, but do not in themselves allow you to retrieve its generation number.

Note the seed and the coordinates of the places you are interested in separately. For a cherry blossom biome, keep the world number, the edition, and the valley position. Our Minecraft biomes and dimensions section helps to precisely describe the landscape rather than just writing "nice spawn."

The set of Minecraft notebooks can be used to keep these landmarks on paper. Among our Minecraft accessories, choose a format that leaves enough space for full numbers and a few field notes.

Finding the seed in Minecraft Java

Open the relevant world, then open the chat. Type /seed and press enter. When the command is available, the game will display the world seed in the chat. Copy the full value rather than trying to type it from memory after closing the game.

In a standard Java solo game, this lookup is normally accessible without having to change survival to a creative world. On a server, access depends on permissions and configuration. Being able to play in the world does not automatically mean all administrative commands are available.

If the result can be copied directly from the chat message in your interface, use that feature. Otherwise, copy the number carefully and compare each group of digits before saving it. The minus sign at the beginning is part of the value: removing it will yield a different seed.

The debug screen is used for a lot of information, including coordinates, but does not replace the seed lookup command in current versions. Avoid looking for the number among the X, Y, and Z coordinates or chunk information.

If the command is unknown or refused, first confirm that you are using Java. Tools and commands differ between editions, as explained on our Minecraft games and editions page. Our Minecraft commands space allows you to distinguish between world lookup and game modification.

Once the seed is noted, add the coordinates of an interesting village or a located mansion. These positions will be more useful for a comparison than a simple screenshot of the point where you launched the command.

Reading the seed in Bedrock settings

In Bedrock, open the settings for the world you have access to. Depending on the interface and platform, you can access the settings during the game or by editing the world from the save list. Look for the "Seed" field in the world options.

The exact placement of the field may vary with interface versions. Game-related sections or advanced options are the places to check. Do not confuse this field with the world name, simulation distance, or the coordinates displayed on screen.

Copy the number if the corresponding button is offered. Otherwise, take the time to note it down in full. On a console, a photo of the field can serve as a draft, but keep a clear text version afterward to avoid hidden or poorly cropped digits.

Reading the seed of a world you own does not require changing its game rules. Avoid enabling options unrelated to your search. The goal is to consult existing information and then exit the settings while keeping the game configuration intact.

If you are simply joining another player's world, the available menus may be limited. The owner can view the seed and pass it on to you if they wish to share it. A Realm world may also require consultation by its owner or from a downloaded copy to which they have access.

The river and sunny village mousepad features a landscape easy to identify among our Minecraft mousepads. For your seed notes, describe the scenery in the same way: river, village, relief, and precise coordinates.

Retrieving the information on a server or a save

On a Java server you administer, the seed command can be executed with the appropriate permissions, including from the server console depending on its configuration. If you are just a player, ask the owner for the value and the generation version. You will avoid working from a seed found in an old announcement that no longer matches the active world.

A server may contain several worlds. The main survival world, a resource world, and an event area do not necessarily share the same seed. Specify the world in which you saw the landscape and, if possible, its coordinates. The name displayed in a portal or menu may help the administrator identify the correct save file.

If you have a local copy of your own world, the simplest way is to open it in a compatible version and view its seed from within the game. Work on a copy if you need to try a different version. An old save may be converted upon opening, so it is worth keeping the original intact.

For technical recovery, the generation files have changed throughout Java versions. Since Java 26.1, the generation settings are found in the data/minecraft/world_gen_settings.dat file of the world; older versions kept them in level.dat. A procedure that only searches the old location may therefore fail on a recent world.

This file reading requires a tool adapted to the save format and version. It is not necessary when the world opens correctly and the command is sufficient. Do not modify the data just to read a number.

Our Minecraft structures page helps document a discovery, such as an ancient city or a Nether fortress. Mention the dimension as well: the same pair of coordinates does not describe the same location in the Overworld and the Nether.

Keeping a complete world record

A useful record contains the seed, edition, creation or known generation version, world type, and special settings. Then add the coordinates of two or three landmarks. This little discipline avoids exchanges where a friend receives a long number without knowing which version to test it in.

Keep the seed as text when using a tool that might round off large numbers. Some spreadsheets or numeric fields display scientific notation and may lose the final digits if they treat the value as an ordinary number. A text note or a field explicitly formatted as text preserves the exact sequence.

Do not add spaces, thousand separators, or commas in the game's seed field. Copy only the expected value, with any negative sign. If you initially entered a word as the seed, it is better to keep the actual number displayed by the created world to share a landmark without ambiguity.

For each location, note X, Y, and Z when height matters. A surface point can be described primarily by X and Z, but a cave entrance or a mining gallery deserves its height. The diamond layer guide recalls why the vertical dimension changes an exploration goal.

Recreating a test world and comparing key landmarks

Create a new world with a distinct name, like "Seed Test." Choose the same edition and, as much as possible, the generation version of the original world. Enter the seed in the provided field before creation, then verify the terrain options and any content that modifies generation.

Once the world is created, check its seed again to confirm the input. This check immediately detects a missing digit, a forgotten sign, or a value interpreted differently. Then compare landmarks at their coordinates, not just the location where the player appears.

The player's spawn point can vary around an area and is not always sufficient proof. A mountain, coastline, or river at specific coordinates provides a better point of comparison. Structures and details may differ between Java and Bedrock even when the general terrain looks similar.

An old world also contains areas generated at different times. A region explored before an update generally retains its existing terrain, whereas a new creation uses the rules chosen for the test. A correct seed may therefore produce a different result if you recreate a previously generated location today.

The first night in survival does not need to be replayed for every comparison if your only goal is to examine a landscape in a test world. Choose the settings of this new world according to the experience sought, while keeping the main game separate.

To prepare a modern house or a treehouse, a test copy allows you to verify the site's dimensions. It does not then automatically transfer the built structure to your survival world.

Understanding why the same seed looks different

Start by comparing the numbers character by character. Long seeds are prone to copying errors, especially when a screenshot crops the beginning or end. Then verify the sign, edition, and world type before concluding that the seed is not working.

A flat world, an amplified world on a compatible edition, or modified generation does not follow the same parameters as a standard world. A pack or mod can also change biomes and structures. The seed is an input for the generator; it does not replace its configuration.

A downloaded adventure map may contain manually created buildings and terrain. Retrieving its seed will not automatically rebuild these creations. To find the map exactly, you need its original save or template.

If you wish to share your own base as it exists, prepare a copy of the world rather than just a number. If you only want to share an interesting start for a new survival game, the seed and the settings are sufficient as initial information.

Frequently asked questions about world seeds

Does changing the world name change its seed?

No. The name is used to identify the save in your menus. The generation seed remains a separate piece of data.

Does a seed contain my builds?

No. It allows a world to be generated according to specific rules. Your builds, inventories, and modifications belong to the save file.

Why does the command not work on Bedrock?

The usual method uses world settings. Commands and interfaces are not identical to those in Java.

What should I share with a friend?

The full number, the edition, the version used, any specific options, and the coordinates of the interesting location. With this information, comparison becomes much easier than with a landscape screenshot alone.
