Fortune or Silk Touch: which enchantment for your pickaxe?

Which enchantment should you choose?

Fortune increases the yield of certain resources. Silk Touch keeps compatible blocks in their original form. Both are incompatible on the same pickaxe in standard survival: one pickaxe for gathering, another for moving blocks—that is the most versatile duo.

You finally find some diamonds, but your pickaxe offers Silk Touch. Should you wait for Fortune? It all depends on what you want to bring back: gems you can use immediately or ore to store. Fortune and Silk Touch serve two different purposes, and neither replaces the requirements of the material you are mining.

This comparison helps you choose your first enchantment, organize two tools, and avoid irreversible mistakes. It complements our Minecraft enchantments and potions guide with scenarios for mining, storage, and building.

Fortune and Silk Touch: two distinct results

Fortune acts on the items dropped by certain blocks. On diamond ore, it can increase the number of diamonds obtained. Silk Touch changes the harvest result when the block allows it: diamond ore is retrieved as ore, with its blue specks in the rock. You can place it elsewhere or break it later with a different pickaxe.

The usual maximum level for Fortune is III. Silk Touch has only one level. A pickaxe with Fortune III is therefore not three times better than a Silk Touch pickaxe: the numbers do not compare the same action. The choice is based on the item you want to put in your inventory.

Your goal Useful choice Point to check
Increase harvest of compatible ore Fortune Use a pickaxe capable of harvesting that ore
Keep the ore for decoration Silk Touch Do not transform it by accident later
Move standard glass Silk Touch Check the enchantment before breaking
Harvest obsidian Pickaxe material matters first Diamond or Netherite pickaxe

The blocks and ores guide helps classify each resource. A storage block made with diamonds is not natural ore: Fortune will not turn a diamond block placed in your vault into a gem-duplicating machine.

When to prioritize Fortune?

Fortune is a good first choice when your next step requires more resources: finishing armor, preparing backup tools, or building a supply of lapis. It notably improves the harvest of ores such as diamond, coal, emerald, lapis, and redstone, with quantity rules that vary by block.

Overworld iron, copper, and gold ores drop raw metals when harvested normally with an appropriate tool. Fortune can increase these yields as well. The old reasoning that "Fortune isn't for iron and gold because they go to the furnace" no longer applies to how these ores function today.

The bonus is not a fixed multiplier guaranteed with every hit. A small sample size can produce a modest result without the enchantment being faulty. To compare your yields, note the number of ores processed and the total obtained over several mining sessions. Do not promise a partner an exact number of diamonds based on a few blocks still in place.

If you are mainly looking for this resource, our guide on diamond search levels complements the tool choice. Depth, exploration method, and the ability to return alive remain just as important as the harvest enchantment.

The ore pattern also lends itself to discreet decor. The diamond ore cushion cover combines the gray of the rock with turquoise touches. Among our Minecraft cushion covers, this type of pattern evokes mining without repeating characters on every surface.

When does Silk Touch become more useful?

Silk Touch is suitable for players who build, collect blocks, or prefer to process their ore later. It notably allows you to keep stone as stone and move standard glass without losing it. For renovations, this avoids having to constantly recraft elements you simply want to reposition.

It also becomes practical during a long excursion: you can bring back the ores, store them in a dedicated area, and then process them with Fortune at your base. This method separates exploration from the final harvest. However, it requires distinguishing between ore variants, as the stone and deepslate versions occupy different stacks.

In a Minecraft construction project, maintaining the block's appearance can be the main goal. A decorative mine gallery is more readable with some ores left visible in the walls. Place them deliberately, then avoid letting a Fortune pickaxe finish the job and turn them into resources.

Silk Touch is not a license to retrieve absolutely everything. Some blocks remain impossible to obtain this way in survival. Before touching a rare item you don't know how to replace, check its behavior and leave it in place if you are in doubt. A specialized enchantment remains subject to each block's rules.

To complete an outfit, compare the shapes of our Minecraft swords and weapons and consult the Minecraft cosplay guide. An accessory's look also depends on its volume and how you wear it.

Limits that neither enchantment removes

The pickaxe material remains decisive. A stone pickaxe with a great enchantment does not become a tool capable of harvesting every ore. For diamonds, prepare at least an iron pickaxe; for obsidian and ancient debris, use a diamond or Netherite pickaxe.

Fortune does not increase the amount of ancient debris harvested. If your goal is to obtain Netherite, the harvest enchantment is not the solution for multiplying debris. The search method, protection against lava, and tool durability are the real preparation levers.

Likewise, Fortune does not produce several obsidian blocks from one. The guide to harvesting obsidian explains the role of lava sources and water, as well as pickaxe choice. Confusing mining speed with yield often leads to attributing to Fortune an effect that belongs to another enchantment.

Finally, neither of these enchantments protects dropped items from falling into lava. Clear the area around a vein before breaking the blocks. If the area opens onto a cavity, inspect the sides and bottom from a stable position. A larger harvest doesn't help when resources disappear instantly.

Getting the enchantment without wasting levels

The enchanting table can offer Fortune or Silk Touch on a compatible tool. Prepare the lapis, the necessary levels, and a correctly set up library environment. The name visible in a proposal indicates an enchantment for that option; the resulting item may receive other compatible ones.

Before accepting, look at your overall project. If you already have an excellent Fortune pickaxe, getting Silk Touch may be more useful than creating an almost identical duplicate. Conversely, when resources are low, a second expensive pickaxe isn't necessarily the immediate priority.

An enchanted book can also be applied at the anvil. Our guide on using an anvil details combinations and their cost. Always read the preview of the result before confirming: an incompatible enchantment will not become compatible just because the book is rare or you have many levels.

Librarians represent another way to obtain books. Their offerings depend on the rules active in the world: experimental trades should not be confused with standard trades. Our article on villager professions helps understand the role of the workstation and trade progression.

To prepare the necessary items, keep the Minecraft crafting file handy. Separate crafting expenses, such as the pickaxe and anvil, from enchanting expenses, such as lapis or levels: this makes your inventory much easier to plan.

Organizing two pickaxes in the same game

When you have both enchantments, assign a stable role to each tool. For example, the Silk Touch pickaxe accompanies construction projects and brings back intact ores; the Fortune pickaxe then processes the supply. You can also bring Fortune directly into the mine if you prefer to leave with resources that are already usable.

Rename the pickaxes clearly and place them in different slots on your hotbar. A name like "Harvest" or "Blocks" is more practical than a decorative label that is hard to distinguish in an emergency. Before mining a valuable block, check the tooltip rather than relying solely on the tool's color.

Build a processing area at your base: solid floor, lighting, an input chest for ores, and an output chest for resources. Place a reasonable batch, then mine it with Fortune. A small, tidy station limits mixing and leaves enough room to pick up items.

Avoid placing your collection ores in the middle of this station. If you want to keep a few specimens for a museum, set them aside in a separate chest before starting. The harvest tool doesn't know which ones you wanted to keep.

Consult the Minecraft mouse pads and our mouse pad dimensions guide to compare keyboard space, movement area, and tray depth before choosing a size.

Adding speed and durability to the right tool

Efficiency speeds up mining for affected blocks; Unbreaking reduces durability consumption; Mending uses collected experience to repair the item under appropriate conditions. These roles combine with Fortune or Silk Touch, but they do not replace the harvest choice.

A very fast construction pickaxe requires attention near blocks you want to preserve. Test it on a low-stakes area to get a feel for the breaking speed. Switching equipment can get you through a wall faster than expected, especially when alternating between multiple materials.

The Mending: repair with experience guide explains why a pickaxe stored in a chest doesn't repair itself just because you gain levels elsewhere. Organize a repair routine before the durability bar nears its end.

If you upgrade a diamond pickaxe to Netherite, prepare the correct recipe at the smithing table. This upgrade preserves the gear's enchantments, but it does not merge Fortune and Silk Touch. You keep two separate tools if you want to benefit from both uses.

The Minecraft keychain collection also offers ore shapes, such as the light-up turquoise diamond keychain. The design can echo your desk mat without requiring every accessory to have the exact same pattern.

Three profiles to help you decide on your first investment

You are a beginner and lacking resources

Often prioritize Fortune on a suitable pickaxe, especially if you have already spotted useful ores. You will be able to craft subsequent gear more easily. Keep a spare pickaxe regardless and apply the basics of Minecraft survival: a rare tool does not replace lighting or a return path.

You build and renovate regularly

Silk Touch can help you gain more comfort on a daily basis. Moving glass, keeping stone, and retrieving decorative ores avoids manufacturing detours. Note the blocks your project needs before randomly enchanting several tools.

You are preparing for a long exploration

Choose based on your storage organization. Bringing back ores intact and processing them at home is practical, but several rock variants can clutter your inventory. A food reserve, supply chests, and the habits of preparing a shelter remain useful to avoid losing the entire contents of an excursion.

To offer a nod to this theme, the gray diamond ore cap combines a neutral base with blue accents. The Minecraft caps allow you to compare this style with designs centered on characters. If you prefer a small object, a piece of jewelry uses the diamond symbol in a different format.

Frequently asked questions about Fortune and Silk Touch

Can both be placed on a single pickaxe?

Not with standard survival rules: the enchantments are incompatible. A command, a mod, or a server system can change the rules, but this is not a combination that can be reproduced with a simple anvil in a classic game.

Can you treat ore retrieved with Silk Touch using Fortune?

Yes. Place the ore in a safe area, then break it with a Fortune pickaxe capable of harvesting it. You will then obtain the resources according to that ore's usual rules. Do not confuse this with a storage block made from resources.

Does Fortune improve furnace results?

No. It acts during the harvesting of compatible blocks. For iron, copper, and gold from the Overworld, the gain applies to the raw metals obtained while mining; smelting then processes these items without applying a new Fortune bonus.

Which tool should I keep if I can only prepare one?

Choose Fortune to harvest more resources, Silk Touch to keep and move blocks. The right answer depends on your next concrete project. Once this need is met, prepare the second tool and give it a clearly identified role.
