Minecraft Bastion: preparing an expedition to the Piglins

Before entering a bastion

Prepare armor, a gold ingot, blocks, food, and a fire resistance potion. Locate an exit before opening a chest. Brute Piglins will attack even if you are wearing gold: the outfit is not enough to make the bastion welcoming.

A massive blackstone structure appears above the lava. Between its broken walls, you can make out a chest, blocks of gold, and several Piglins. The bastion in Minecraft promises interesting loot, but its vertical structure and inhabitants require more preparation than a simple walk through the Nether.

This guide helps you recognize the building, choose your objective, and progress without getting trapped in a room. It complements our Minecraft structures dossier with an itinerary designed for a first expedition.

Recognizing a bastion and distinguishing it from a fortress

A bastion is primarily built of blackstone and refined variants of this material. It looks like a large, massive ruin with thick walls, open sections, and sometimes gilded blackstone. A Nether fortress instead features Nether bricks and characteristic long walkways.

This distinction matters for your objective. Blaze rods and certain sought-after crops point toward the fortress; Netherite upgrade smithing templates and Piglin treasures point toward bastions. Our guide on finding a Nether fortress allows you to prepare for the other type of expedition without confusing the two buildings.

Bastions can generate in Nether biomes other than basalt deltas. A structure may, however, extend near a biome border: do not judge only by the blocks visible from your position. The guide to the five Nether biomes helps you read the environment and choose a viable route.

There is no universal direction that leads to the next bastion in every world. Move forward with noted coordinates and recognizable waypoints. A vast sea of lava may offer good visibility of the facades, but visibility does not mean a safe access point is directly in front of you.

The biomes and dimensions page completes this reading of the terrain. Before approaching, identify at least one shore or gallery that will allow you to return to the portal.

The four main bastion types

Bastions come in four main configurations: bridge, hoglin stables, housing units, and treasure room. Their volumes, access points, and chest distributions differ. It is therefore better to observe the actual building than to try to rely on memory for a path learned from another variant.

The bridge type is recognized by its composition around a major access point. Stables include areas associated with Hoglins and several levels. Housing units form a collection of rooms and passages around a central zone. The treasure room features a large vertical volume with lava and precious items at the bottom.

For a first visit, identification is mostly useful for anticipating dangers. A large central void indicates potential falls. Several open levels mean enemies can reach you from above or via a staircase you do not yet see.

Take an observation tour from a stable area. Identify openings, continuous floors, and places where a wall can protect you. A discreet entrance on the side can be easier to secure than a direct descent into the heart of the building.

The cutaway world poster, from the sky to the Nether showcases the different depths of the universe. Among the Minecraft posters, this type of composition helps tell the story of the journey between your base and underground expeditions.

Preparing equipment and a fallback point

Bring armor in good condition, a melee weapon, a ranged weapon if you are proficient with one, and several stacks of blocks. A piece of gold armor prevents initial hostility from ordinary Piglins under normal conditions, but it does not protect against all provocations and does not calm the brutes.

Add a fire resistance potion and place it in an accessible slot. It protects against lava for its duration, not against axe blows or falls. Do not substitute having a vial in your bag for properly preparing your pathways.

The guide on using a shield helps you prepare for contact situations, and the bow enchantments comparison allows you to choose a ranged weapon suited to your arrow supply. Plan for equipment you know how to use, not just the ones with the most impressive-looking enchantments.

Set up a small drop-off point outside the bastion, in a closed and marked location. You can leave supplies there and store your initial loot without immediately traveling across the entire Nether. The Minecraft survival dossier gathers useful reflexes for organizing this type of stopover.

Your return to the Overworld must also remain accessible. The guide on obtaining obsidian and preparing the portal helps you anticipate this link. Note the portal coordinates before continuing your search for a structure.

Compare Minecraft lamps based on their shape and intended location. A glowing portal can accompany a dark decor without needing multiple large pieces on the same piece of furniture.

Ordinary Piglins vs. Brutes: different rules apply

Ordinary Piglins are interested in gold and can barter with you. Brute Piglins wear dark attire and carry a gold axe; they defend the bastion and attack on sight. Throwing an ingot on the ground will not distract them as it might draw the attention of an ordinary Piglin.

The gold armor rule, therefore, does not apply to brutes. It also does not allow you to freely loot chests in front of other Piglins. Opening certain containers or breaking gold-related blocks can trigger their aggression. Prepare the area before interacting.

Our article on bartering with Piglins details standard exchanges. In a bastion, clearly separate moments for trading and moments for collecting loot: the same inhabitants may react differently when you touch the building's resources.

Avoid randomly striking a group where several types of creatures are mixed. One attack can mobilize other nearby enemies and make a small room difficult to leave. Use walls to limit approach directions, then handle opponents from a zone where you know the exit.

The 750ml Zombified Piglin water bottle represents another member of this visual family. The Zombified Piglin should not be confused with the bastion brute. Among our Minecraft water bottles, the choice of character can extend your interest in the various Nether creatures.

Progressing room by room before touching the chests

A successful first visit starts with a limited area. Secure the entrance, check side accesses, and verify the upper levels. If you cannot monitor all openings, reduce some of them with blocks to create a passage that is easier to control.

Build landings and ledges when the floor is interrupted. A jump that seems simple on the way in becomes less comfortable when you are backing away from an attack. Prefer passages where you can walk with your shield or food in hand without having to aim for an isolated block.

Do not break the block under your feet to descend faster. Bastions contain hidden volumes and lava pockets. Descend via a staircase you can climb back up, keeping an eye on the next landing before committing yourself.

Before opening a chest, take a pause to observe. Check your health, listen for noises, and check your escape route. If your inventory is already full, return to the drop-off point. Sorting items at length in an open interface in the middle of a hostile zone unnecessarily increases your exposure time.

The mobs and creatures dossier helps prepare for encounters, but the terrain remains your main tool. A room whose access you control is easier to explore than a large space where every direction brings a new threat.

Choosing the loot to bring back as a priority

Chests can contain resources, equipment, and special items like the Pigstep disc. Not all chests share the exact same content, and every visit does not provide all possible rewards. Set your priority before filling all your slots with common blocks.

The Netherite upgrade smithing template is a major objective. It can appear in bastion chests; the treasure room variant has templates in its generated treasure. On a server or in an already-visited structure, another player may have obviously already retrieved this content.

Do not confuse this template with an armor trim template. The former is used for upgrading to Netherite; the others change appearance according to their pattern. Our smithing table guide explains the slots and ingredients needed.

Bring the first template back to your base before launching yourself into a new risky room. You can duplicate it with the appropriate ingredients, including seven diamonds and netherrack for the Netherite upgrade template. The original remains essential for launching this copy: avoid consuming your last specimen without having planned for the next step.

Preparing diamond reserves is therefore part of the expedition, even if these gems are not your goal in the Nether. A copy prepared at your base can save you from having to immediately search for another bastion.

The Minecraft toys collection allows you to associate this chest with a character or a setting depending on the space available on your shelf.

Methodically harvesting gold and decorative blocks

Blocks of gold catch the eye, but collecting them can provoke nearby Piglins. Prepare your exit before mining and do not assume a calm group will remain indifferent. Gold armor does not negate this reaction.

Gilded blackstone is also worth attention. Its collection and the result obtained depend on the tool and the enchantment. If you wish to keep the block for decoration, plan which pickaxe to use before breaking it. The Minecraft blocks and ores dossier helps distinguish a decorative block from a resource to be processed.

For a first outing, ordinary construction materials can wait. It is often more useful to return with a template, a disc, or a few specific items than to take more risks to fill the last slots with blackstone.

If you subsequently wish to recreate a bastion atmosphere in your own world, photograph the palette or note the variants used. You will be able to build a setting inspired by these ruins without dismantling every wall of the original structure.

The orange lava texture cushion cover captures the contrast between dark surfaces and glowing areas. Minecraft cushion covers allow you to find this palette in a format suitable for a chair or a reading nook.

Knowing when to end the visit

Turn back when your main objective is reached, your supplies are dwindling, or you can no longer easily recognize the path you traveled. The chest still visible at the back of another room does not need to be opened during the same trip.

Reach your drop-off point, store important items, and then check the resources necessary for the return journey. A nearly depleted potion and a low block supply should lead you to take the established route, not to attempt a shortcut over the lava.

To start, use our guide to prepare for your Netherite progression to organize the following steps: templates, copies, ingots, and diamond gear. Bastion loot becomes useful once it is combined with thorough preparation.

Make a note of the parts already explored and those left behind. For a second visit, you will be able to bring targeted gear and avoid revisiting the same chests. On a server, share these landmarks with your group so that everyone knows what has already been collected.

Frequently asked questions about Minecraft bastions

Does wearing full gold armor make the visit safe?

No. Brutes will attack regardless of the gold, and ordinary Piglins can be provoked by certain actions. A piece of gold armor helps manage part of their behavior, but does not grant blanket authorization to open every chest.

Is it necessary to defeat all the inhabitants?

No. You can limit your visit to one area, secure some access points, and leave with your objective. Methodical exploration does not require clearing out the entire structure on the first expedition.

Can you find a template without a treasure room?

Yes, the upgrade template can appear in other bastion chests, but it is not guaranteed in every one. The treasure room is particularly interesting for this search, provided you prepare for the dangers and verify that the area hasn't already been looted.

Is fire resistance enough against brutes?

No. It helps against lava, but brutes attack with axes. Maintain proper defense, use obstacles to your advantage, and keep an escape route clear before engaging in combat.
