Allay in Minecraft: how to make it pick up items?
Give an item to an Allay: it will search for matching copies dropped on the ground and bring them back to you. It does not craft, mine, or empty chests. A note block allows you to move its delivery point; a jukebox and an amethyst shard are used to duplicate the creature.
A small blue companion that picks up forgotten resources: the Allay seems immediately practical, but its actions deserve some explanation. Many disappointments stem from expectations that are too high. Giving it a diamond does not make diamonds appear in a cave. Showing it wheat does not send it to harvest a field that is still planted. Its role begins when the items already exist on the ground.
This guide follows a simple progression: finding an Allay, verifying its first collection, organizing a reliable return, and then, if necessary, obtaining several. Our space dedicated to Minecraft creatures helps place this companion among the other inhabitants of the game. The goal here is to build a small, understandable installation, which you can then expand according to your needs.
Where to find an Allay and prepare for its return?
In survival, look for Allays in certain cages at pillager outposts and in certain cells in woodland mansions. Not all structures contain them. An empty cage or a mansion without the right room does not mean your game is malfunctioning: sometimes you have to continue exploring.
Before freeing a creature, deal with the enemies occupying the area. Observe the access points, prepare an exit, and avoid breaking the bars in the middle of a fight. The Allay is a collection companion, not an ally capable of clearing the building for you. Our guide to locating a Minecraft mansion helps prepare for this search, while the structures and places to explore section puts mansions and outposts into your itinerary.
Prepare the route before leaving
Bring food, blocks, a simple item to give it, and a lead if you intend to use one during transport. Note the coordinates of your base and any intermediate shelter. On foot, advance in stages while regularly checking that the Allay is following. Its movement should not be equated to an automatic teleportation home: complicated terrain or a narrow passage can be enough to separate the group.
A travel notebook helps keep track of cages already inspected, especially when working in a group. The set of ten Minecraft notebooks allows you to keep this tracking off-screen; everyone can note a structure, its position, and the result of the exploration. Minecraft accessories thus take on a concrete role in organizing the game, without replacing the coordinates saved in-game.
Successfully complete the first collection in five steps
- Set yourself up in an open area, near the Allay.
- Interact with it while holding a common item, for example, a piece of dirt.
- Verify that this item appears in its hand.
- Drop a few copies of the same item nearby, then step back slightly.
- Wait for it to retrieve them and come back to throw them to you.
This little trial is better than testing it immediately over a large farm. With a flat floor and a single type of item, you can see every step: instruction given, item detected, collection, return. You can also stand far enough away from the pile to avoid picking up the items yourself before the Allay does.
A sample serves as an instruction
The held item represents what it must look for. To switch from dirt to another resource, first retrieve the sample by interacting with an empty hand, then give it the new item. Avoid modified tools or items with special properties during training: identical ordinary blocks make the result much easier to interpret.
The way it works differs from that of a tamed animal. In our guide to taming a wolf, the relationship is built with another interaction and other behaviors. The Allay, however, responds to a collection task. It is a good opportunity to compare two creatures without assuming that food, commands, or movement translate from one to the other.
What the Allay picks up, and what it doesn't do
Imagine wood harvesting. You break a tree, items drop, and the Allay assigned to this item type can participate in the collection around you. However, it does not chop the trunk in your place. Similarly, it does not turn ore still in the rock into a transportable resource and does not take a stack from a closed chest.
It also does not copy the item received. If you give it a diamond and no other diamond is available on the ground in its search area, it has nothing to bring back. This distinction avoids confusing its collection with the duplication of the Allay itself, explained later.
Choose a task that suits it
Start with a small area where items drop regularly: a manual chopping area, a workshop where you test a harvesting system, an experimental sorting space. The Allay can fly, but partitions, level differences, and a poorly placed delivery point complicate its path. It does not provide unlimited collection throughout the entire world.
For a storage room that classifies many stackable resources, our Java item sorter guide covers another method. The two approaches can complement each other: the Allay collects certain items in the workspace, then a storage installation takes over. The Minecraft redstone page serves as a starting point if you want to understand these circuits before combining them.
Off-screen, a small scene of Minecraft figurines can show the roles: one character harvests, a second transports, a chest receives. This breakdown is particularly useful for explaining why the companion is not responsible for the entire chain.
Using a note block as a delivery point
By default, the Allay associated with your item returns to you. To prevent it from constantly crossing the workshop in pursuit of you, you can have it hear a note block. It then chooses this block as a temporary destination and brings the collected items there. This preference lasts for thirty seconds after the sound is heard; new notes can maintain it.
Test the drop-off point before automation
Place the note block near the collection area, with clear aerial access. Make it play, then drop a few items corresponding to the Allay's instruction. Observe where they are thrown. Then, place the recovery device under the actual drop zone, rather than building a chest immediately in a randomly chosen location.
For an occasional trial, you can produce the notes manually. For prolonged operation, a circuit can repeat them. First, keep only one destination block active: several sound sources make the behavior more difficult to diagnose. Also, check the remaining space in your storage. Items on the floor despite an active Allay can simply reveal poorly designed reception.
Sound plays a precise mechanical role here. Our article on Minecraft music and C418 rather explores the musical atmosphere of the game. Listening to a soundtrack while building does not replace the sound of the block placed in the world. This separation between background music, music discs, and note blocks avoids most confusion.
For a gaming station where you sketch out routes, the sunny river and village mousepad adds a landscape decor. You can compare sizes among the Minecraft mousepads according to the space actually available on the desk.
Duplicating an Allay with a jukebox and amethyst
Duplication uses another block: the jukebox. Play a music disc nearby the Allay and wait to see it dance. During this dance, give it an amethyst shard. A second Allay appears when the conditions are met. Therefore, it is not necessary to pair them or raise a baby.
After duplication, the two Allays must wait five minutes before they can duplicate again. If you try too early, adding shards without verifying this delay will not solve the problem. Also, make sure you are using an amethyst shard and that the creature is still dancing within range of the music.
If you are preparing equipment from scratch, the Minecraft crafting and manufacturing section helps organize your workshop recipes. Store the disc, the jukebox, and the shards separately so as not to confuse duplication equipment with the delivery circuit material.
Assign a role to each new companion
Prepare the second instruction before multiplying the team. Two Allays looking for the same resource in a small room do not necessarily constitute a useful improvement. A second type of collection, another work area, or relief for a separate installation gives a clearer objective to the duplication.
The functioning has nothing to do with what is described in our guide to taming and installing a cat. Avoid automatically applying the breeding recipes of other creatures. If you are organizing a discovery workshop with a child, our Minecraft guide for parents helps choose a progression that leaves time to understand each interaction.
Building an easy-to-understand collection workshop
For a first installation, separate three areas: the zone where items drop, a free-flight space, and the reception area. No need to start with a huge factory. A compact workshop allows you to see if the instruction is correct, if the companion travels, and if the items arrive at storage properly.
A trial with two resources
Deposit a small mixture of dirt and cobblestone, then give dirt to a single Allay. Look at what disappears from the pile and what remains. Then retrieve its instruction, give it cobblestone, and start again. You thus test the task change with exactly the same setup, which eliminates several possible causes of failure.
Then add the note block, then only the storage. At each step, keep the previous setup as long as it works. This method aligns with the projects proposed for playing Minecraft with a parent-child project: everyone can hold a role, announce their hypothesis, and observe the result without modifying the entire installation at the same time.
If you want to decorate the workshop walls, draw a blue silhouette or a delivery arrow. The guide to pixel art on a block grid explains how to go from a pattern to a readable construction. Useful signs take precedence over details: one color for each resource and one symbol for reception are sufficient.
A selection of Minecraft posters can also provide composition and palette ideas for this wall, without forcing you to copy an entire image. In a real room, Minecraft lamps can accompany this visual universe. The green mug with monsters and dragon offers another reminder of the game on a shelf or a tray separate from the equipment. These items extend the atmosphere; the workshop diagram remains a creation that you can adapt freely.
Solving the most common problems
It follows me but doesn't pick anything up
First check the Allay's hand. Did it receive the correct item? Are the copies actually dropped on the ground, or still placed as blocks? Return to a trial with a mundane, identical item. Move away from the pile so you don't pick it up yourself and leave a clear passage to the companion.
It drops items somewhere other than intended
A note block may have modified its delivery point, or the sound preference has expired. Reduce the installation to a single destination and run a short test again. Also see if the items arrive near the block but bounce out of the recovery area.
It stays behind during the trip
Retrace your steps and search around the last obstacle cleared. Fast travel, closed doors, and complicated passages can break the continuity of the journey. For this first return, calmness and regular stops are more effective than speed. Our guide on how to approach and settle a fox also reminds us how much path preparation matters when moving a creature.
A well-lit workshop also avoids mixing collection with mob spawning. Use the principles from the guide on lighting your base against monsters and keep the Allay away from traps, lava, and dangerous machines. Its glowing color should not be treated as a source of lighting for the room.
Frequently asked questions before starting collection
Can the Allay pick up multiple types of items at the same time?
Its instruction corresponds to the item it is holding. For reliable initial organization, assign one type of resource to each Allay and change the sample when you change its role. Multi-tasking without a reference point needlessly complicates troubleshooting.
Are the note block and the jukebox interchangeable?
No. The note block is used to guide delivery thanks to its notes. The jukebox plays a disc, makes the Allay dance, and is involved in its duplication with an amethyst shard. Check the name of the block when following a step.
Do I need to look for a second Allay to get more?
One can be enough if you have the duplication materials and follow the dance and waiting conditions. Prepare a welcoming area for the new companion before starting again.
Is it useful near a bee farm?
It can participate in collecting items that have already been released, but it does not replace harvesting interactions or precautions toward the bees. The guide on harvesting honey without provoking bees explains this part of the production. The pickup happens afterward.
To represent animals in a small farm garden, Minecraft toys allow you to compose a scene distinct from the technical setup. The set below features a bee and a chicken: it is these visible characters that guide the decor concept.
Moving from a successful trial to a sustainable setup
Before expanding, verify three results: the Allay finds the chosen item, it reaches the intended destination, and the storage collects what it drops. If these three steps work separately and then together, you have a solid foundation. Note the instruction for each companion and keep space clear around its paths.
To organize multiple workshops in the same base, our Minecraft builds section helps you think about space and access. A small, clear area is easier to monitor than a machine hidden behind walls. Start with one companion, one resource, and a visible return: it is from this first successful circuit that the Allay becomes a true collection assistant.
